About the job
What it's like
You would use hypnosis to help people make positive changes to their thinking and behaviour.
Hypnotherapy is a complementary medicine. During treatments you would help someone go into a deeply relaxed state, or altered consciousness, and make suggestions to their subconscious mind.
People will trust you to help them overcome a wide range of psychological and physical conditions.
These could include:
anxiety
panic attacks
phobias
sleep problems
lack of confidence
stress-related physical conditions
unwanted habits such as smoking or overeating
Hypnotherapy can also be used as a way to manage pain and help with childbirth.
You would:
have an initial consultation with your client
ask about the person’s medical and social history
recommend a course of treatment
induce a hypnotic trance
make positive suggestions and statements
take notes and write reports on progress
Some people may need several sessions for the treatment to be successful. You might also choose to combine hypnotherapy with other types of psychotherapy and counselling techniques.

Hours
Most hypnotherapists are self-employed and run their own practice. This means that you will choose your own working hours. You may offer evening and weekend appointments to suit your clients.

Environment
You could work from your own home, or from rooms in a shared practice, private hospital or clinic. You may also practise hypnotherapy in some NHS hospitals.
